December 2011

Just wrapped another radio drama – for The Wire on Radio 3… ‘Zurich’ by Pearse Elliott, to air on or about February 25th 2012.

Marking something of a departure for me (!), I’ve agreed to step into the role of Santa in Kaleidoscope’s stage adaptation of Tim Burton’s ‘The Nightmare before Christmas’, performing 5 shows between Dec 15-17 inclusive, at the Town Hall Newry. Should be fun…

…as was, in October, my outing as Reginald Lannister, cousin to Charles Dance’s Tywin on HBO’s Game Of Thrones.

‘A Year Of Greater Love’, my full-length screenwriting debut, is now through post-production and scheduled to air early next year… maybe Feb, but tbc.

Also next year, though not sure exactly when, RTE screen Dancing Girl Productions’ ‘Jo And Jack’ – a lovely animation for younger viewers – for which I’ve recorded ‘Dad’.

Given the current frequency of posts… I’d best say Merry Christmas now!

September stuff

Playing Des, a BBC reporter, in Canderblinks’ ‘Good Vibrations’ movie. When Terri Hooley arrives at Portland Place with The Undertones ‘Teenage Kicks’ in his sweaty palm, Des recognises him and gets him past security, to John Peel, and his own little niche in music history…

… A Year of Greater Love starts shooting on the 25th I believe…

…and watch out in October for the next round of deep sea japes, courtesy of the good ship ‘Donegal Catch’!

May 15th – way too long!

Feet barely touching the ground! MA continuing apace, and have, in recent weeks, recorded a radio drama for RTE – Gary Mitchell’s ‘Freedom Of Poverty – been shooting a modest part in Ronan Bennett’s new 4-part network drama, ‘Undisclosed’. Also, have a 1-hour drama  currently in development with BBC NI. Draft 2 due this week.

Fast and Loose

Having just started the Creative Writing MA at QUB School Of English, I signed up for last weekend’s Fast And Loose – a night of new work for the stage, to be written, rehearsed and performed in 24 hours. We met last Friday evening, were given some ‘inspiration’, told how many male and female cast we could have (one of each in my case) and set to work at computers in the Seamus Heaney Centre. Five scripts were finished at 7am at which point, project producer Emily DeDakis saw them handed on to the directors and actors (mostly themselves undergrads in Drama and English) who had until 6.30 on Saturday evening to prepare a finished piece for the paying public.

Vivienne And The Giant’s Boot

Eighteen months since its conception, Vivienne and The Giant’s Boot is a real book!
Available to order via this site (£6.99 incl. p&p) and shortly to go on sale at various retail-type places, incl. Amazon, it’s the story of a little girl’s daydream at the Giant’s Causeway. Vikings, the Spanish Armada…and the Giant of course, all get a look in courtesy of William Simpson’s wonderful images. Enjoy!

SIAP

Although the award period ended in June 2009, I’d like to give a belated nod to the assistance received through the SIAP (Support For The Individual Artist) scheme, supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The scheme, which I’d happily recommend anyone to apply for who needs a modest cash injection to progress a creative project, was of invaluable assistance during the 12 months that I was redrafting JESSICA and THE BATTLE FOR ABBEY WOOD, two novels for younger readers.
